Pia Eikaas

1985, lives and works at Copenhagem

The artist Pia Eikaas works with materials such as ropes, threads, and nets. Since an artist residency at Pivô in São Paulo in 2017, Eikaas became interested in the protective veils that cover buildings under construction, undergoing renovation and restoration, especially after witnessing the replacement of the nets on the Copan building. When the building’s degradation began to pose risks to passersby, they were incorporated into the facade of this city icon, changing its color and shape in a temporary state that remains to this day. The work Fantasma (lygia lina lisa) reuses this material to create a ghostly figure, which was installed at the back of the Copan building, observing and haunting the site.

The other work, Buracos ou cura ou identidade ou seja lá o que isso for, was composed of five small pocket mirrors adorned with nets, ropes, and plaster, placed at the border of the USP campus, where the grass ends and the concrete begins—something left over from the parking lot days, a mark that reflects the passage of time and the uses of this space. These mirrors resize the landscape with a minimal gesture; the shine of the reflection at night seems to make the stars fall, inverting sky and earth. During the exhibition, there was a nightly patrol by security guards who serve the university, and the sparkle of the objects caused one of them to be taken off the stage.
